Istanbul for first-timers
Istanbul is a huge city spread across two continents, where each district feels like a city of its own. On a first visit it helps to divide your time between three areas: Sultanahmet, the heart of Byzantium and the Ottomans; Eminönü, Süleymaniye, Galata and Karaköy on either side of the Golden Horn; and the shores of the Bosphorus.
What to see
- Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Mosque) and the Basilica Cistern are a few minutes' walk from one another.
- Allow at least three hours for Topkapı Palace and the Harem; closed on Tuesdays.
- Süleymaniye Mosque, Mimar Sinan's largest complex in Istanbul; the Golden Horn is visible from its back garden.
- Galata Tower and the streets of Karaköy are at their best towards sunset.
- The best way to see the Bosphorus is by ferry: Bosphorus cruises from Eminönü or a crossing to Üsküdar.
How many days?
Three days are a good start for a first visit. With five days you will also have time for Fener-Balat, Chora (Kariye), Kadıköy-Moda and the Princes' Islands; with a week, you can add a day trip to Bursa or Edirne.
When to go
April–June and September–October are the most comfortable months. July and August are hot and crowded; winter is rainy, but the museums are quiet.
Transport
The tram (T1) links Sultanahmet with Eminönü and Kabataş. The İstanbulkart works on all public transport. From the airport you can get into the city by Havaist, Havabus, metro or a fixed-price transfer.
