The historic port of the Black Sea
Trabzon has been a port for Black Sea trade since antiquity; a city that was capital of the Empire of Trebizond under the Komnenos dynasty and an important provincial centre in the Ottoman period.
What to see
- Hagia Sophia of Trabzon: a 13th-century building known for its frescoes; today it is used as a mosque.
- Sümela Monastery: a monastery clinging to a sheer cliff in the Altındere valley. It sometimes closes partly for restoration; check whether it is open before you go.
- Uzungöl: highland houses and walks around the lake.
- Boztepe: a viewpoint hill overlooking the city and the sea; tea gardens.
What to eat
Hamsi (anchovies), Akçaabat köftesi, kuymak, Black Sea pide and Laz böreği.
Practical information
- The weather is changeable even in summer; bring a raincoat.
- For Sümela and Uzungöl you need a car or a tour; both fit into one day, but it is tiring.
