Edirne was the second Ottoman capital. The Selimiye Mosque and Complex, which Mimar Sinan called 'my masterpiece', is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Historic Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling, held every summer at the wrestling ground in Sarayiçi, is known as one of the oldest sporting events in the world; the 665th Kırkpınar took place on 3–5 July 2026. The stone bridges over the Meriç and the Tunca are also symbols of the city.
