Why Ephesus matters
In the Roman period, Ephesus was one of the most important cities of the province of Asia. Today it is on the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the best-preserved cities of the ancient world.
What to see
- Library of Celsus: a library built in the 2nd century AD, its façade re-erected.
- Great Theatre: a theatre for tens of thousands, looking down the Arcadian (Harbour) Street.
- Terrace Houses: the homes of wealthy Ephesians, decorated with mosaics and frescoes; they need a separate ticket and are well worth seeing.
- Ephesus Museum (Selçuk): statues from the excavations and statues of Artemis.
- The remains of the Temple of Artemis, the İsa Bey Mosque and the Basilica of St John on Ayasuluk Hill.
- The House of the Virgin Mary (Mount Bülbül) and the village of Şirince.
How to visit
Ephesus has two entrances. It is easier to enter by the upper gate (Magnesia) and walk downhill; at the end you can take a taxi back to the upper gate. In summer, go in at opening time and bring plenty of water and a hat.
Getting there, how many days
From İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport, Selçuk can be reached by train with the İZBAN connection, or by transfer. Allow one full day for Ephesus and Selçuk and another half day for Şirince and the House of the Virgin Mary.
