What to expect?
In the Roman period, Ephesus was one of the most important cities in the province of Asia, and it is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The façade of the Library of Celsus, Curetes Street and the Great Theatre, which held about 25,000 people, form the backbone of the visit.
The Terrace Houses are the multi-storey homes of the city's wealthy families; their wall paintings and mosaics can be seen under a protective roof. As they're covered, they make a good break from the summer heat.
Allow at least four hours for the whole site; in summer, start early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
